Childrens book artist and illustrator working with textiles and collage. Exciting workshop using typewriters, sewing machines and music. Catherine was artist in residence during the first second phase of a 'Reggio Emilia' inspired project called Art to Start. She is currently engaged in two Creative Partnerships projects, one in London and the other Southsea.

I have an MA in Communication Design from CentraI St Martins and BA Hons in Combined Arts. I work as a textile illustrator and I have recently completed my second children’s pop up book published by Tango Books.

I have worked for the last twelve years in schools on many projects producing a variety of outcomes including banners, wall panels, murals and books. More recently my work has been shaped by the process of creativity and I have become very interested in the work of the pre schools in Reggio Emilia and the philosophy of child centred creativity.

I enjoy working with children and feel that my communication skills are well developed. I have also experience lecturing at FE & HE level.

I am inspired by traditional fairy stories and the art of re-telling them to relate to our lives in contemporary society.

I have a current enhanced disclosure certificate as well as public liability insurance.

CRB Disclosure

I have had an Enhanced Disclosure check within the last three years and can provide evidence of this request.

CRB checks DO NOT relieve you from your child protection responsibilities and duty of care towards children and young people.

A criminal record shown on a disclosure does not prevent an artist appearing in the Directory, unless it is a schedule One offence under the Children and Young Person’s Act 1933. It is your responsibility to make adequate checks before employing LONSAS Associates and to implement a sufficient child protection policy. Click here for further information.

Director of Devon Artists in Schools Initiatove

Catherine has been registered with DAISI as an artist available for work with children and young people and those who work with them in Devon and Torbay.

Most recently Catherine was one of the 8 artist researchers on DAISI’s Art to Start project for early years settings, which ran from September 2007 to May 2008. For this project she worked closely with staff in a primary school in Exeter. The project included a sustained relationship with the school through 12 one day visits, plus training and sharing events. It required the artist to work in partnership with the setting, planning and documenting together, and also to document their experiences in a format that could be shared with a wider audience. At the project’s dissemination event on May 15th 2008 Catherine presented effectively to a mixed audience of artists, early years staff and Local Authority Officers.

Throughout Art to Start Catherine showed herself to be extremely supportive and nurturing to the children, providing a framework for their explorations but making sure they had plenty of space to lead their own experiences. She was always well prepared, often creating stimulating, enticing environments in advance, and yet ready to change her plans according to the needs of the group with whom she was working. Catherine also maintained a high level of professionalism and understanding in her ability to interact effectively with the many different interested parties, from Head Teachers to other artists, project consultants to classroom assistants, 4 year olds to their parents and carers.

I would thoroughly recommend Catherine to you as an artist who is able to use her own creative and technical exploring and making skills to support learning and experience of young people, who she places at the centre of each session. Catherine also incorporates a range of materials and new technology – I have witnessed workshops where she has worked in the classroom and out of doors, through story telling, with puppets and light boxes, 3D constructing and 2D mark making, with digital technology.

In addition, Catherine has led 11 other workshop days for DAISI during the academic year 2007-8. These were in rural primary schools across Devon. Content spanned silk flag making, puppets and textiles. Catherine always receives positive feedback from the teachers, with whom she works and, the children alike.

As a creative individual adept at communicating her enthusiasm with a wide range of people, Catherine will be an asset to any project.

The Moveable Feast Workshop Company

Catherine is both an excellent artist and excellent workshop facilitator. She is full of ideas, has bags of enthusiasm and is able to apply many different techniques and artforms. Catherine was a valuable and valued member of the Moveable Feast Workshop Company and Network for several years, running events, participating in professional development initiatives and co-facilitating trainings. She has a good sense of humour, is a strong communicator and is very reliable.
