What is a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Disclosure?
This is a vetting procedure undertaken by the Criminal Records Bureau to
help employers recruit safely. The body aims to ensure that those
working with children, young people or vulnerable adults do not pose a
risk to their safety or wellbeing. The CRB is an executive agency of the
Home Office that processes checks against data on criminal records.
The Criminal Records Bureau only checks information held on UK
Government and Police data. If you have lived in other countries, your
employer may request that you seek equivalent disclosure from the
relevant authorities. More information on this can be found on the CRB
website.
Who needs to obtain a CRB disclosure?
It is expected that all those working with children, young people and
vulnerable adults will undergo this vetting procedure before taking up
position. Employers with a duty of care to children, young people or
vulnerable adults hold a legal responsibility to ensure those they
recruit to work with these groups do not pose a risk.
How do I get a CRB Disclosure?
An individual can only obtain a CRB disclosure through a registered
body. Registered bodies are usually local authorities or employers who
provide this service for their employees. It can often be difficult for
those seeking freelance work with children, young people or vulnerable
adults to obtain a CRB check without first being engaged by an employer.
LONSAS is a registered body and provides a CRB processing service for
freelance artists and practitioners seeking work with children and
young people in London.
If you are based outside of these regions you can search for an registered umbrella body using the
CRB website umbrella bodies finder
