October Gallery Events

The next series of workshops, seminars and events at the October Gallery brings more variety, new experiences and inspiration from contemporary art from all around the planet.

Creative workshops - El Anatsui

4 – 30 January 2010
In the World But Don’t Know the World?
The celebrated artist El Anatsui presents a major new metal sculpture, which comes to the October Gallery after a glittering premiere at the 3rd Moscow Biennale. Using aluminium liquor bottle tops and copper wire, his works weave complex histories from surprising materials, creating opulent and monumental works from something humble and discarded.

Creative workshops - Aubrey Williams

Now and Coming Time
7th February – 3rd April 2010
Aubrey Williams (1926-1990) canvases explore a spectrum of themes, including astronomy and ecology to the music of Shostakovich. Born in Guyana, Williams began painting and drawing from the age of five. His paintings have always resisted classification, evolving through many distinct phases and embracing immaculately accomplished figurative studies to explosive, vibrant abstracts

All school workshops take place at the gallery from 10 - 12pm. £90 per group (£210 for three).

Story-telling Musical Workshops

7, 8, 10 December 2009
South African based musician Phillip Nangle will lead some exclusive workshops, combining theatre, music and art.
Using traditional folk instruments such as the mbira, bows and panpipes, the children will venture on a musical journey, creating their own tuneful tales!

Puppet-Making Workshops

19, 20 and 21 January 2010
Focusing on the theme of ‘reusing’ and taking inspiration from El Anatsui’s sculpture, artist Charles Foster-Hall will run a series of puppet workshops. Participants will explore ideas and then make half life-sized articulated puppets to their own personalised designs. They will be able to develop their art skills, in addition to experiencing performance techniques, character creation and team work.
